Life is Strange: Double Exposure Developer Interview – Behind the Evolution of Max’s Powers and Visual Direction

We had the opportunity to have a conversation with Life is Strange: Double Exposure Game Director Jonathan Stauder and Staff Writer Aysha Farah, in our interview, new details emerged about the development process behind the latest installment in the supernatural adventure series. Life is Strange: Double Exposure serves as the fourth main entry in the series and acts as a direct sequel to the original Life is Strange game.

The Evolution of Max’s Powers

“During the development of Double Exposure, certain aspects of Max’s powers evolved a great deal. Often we made adjustments to her powers to work with our budget,” Stauder and Farah shared. The most intriguing revelation was about an abandoned power concept called “entanglement,” which would have introduced a unique approach to the series’ signature time-manipulation mechanics. “Max could entangle the locked phone with the other phone to unlock it and spy on what the person was using their phone for,” they explained. This mechanic would have allowed for intricate puzzle-solving and investigation scenarios, connecting objects and their properties across different timelines.

However, the development team ultimately chose to refine and focus their efforts on more impactful gameplay elements. This mechanic was scaled back in favor of the current timeline-swapping system, with both developers noting that “her new powers, ‘shift’ and ‘pulse’, gave us more than enough small, moment-to-moment gameplay to support the game.” The final version of Max’s abilities appears to be more streamlined, allowing her to swap large parts of the environment between timelines for more dramatic and meaningful moments in the story.

A New Visual Direction

The visual evolution of Double Exposure represents a significant technological leap forward for the series. “The biggest changes were motivated by using Unreal Engine 5 which allows us to push the established art style further,” Stauder and Farah revealed.

The team implemented 100% real-time lighting for the first time in the series’ history, a technical achievement that opens up new possibilities for storytelling and atmosphere. Though they emphasized their commitment to maintaining the franchise’s signature painterly aesthetic, the advancement in technology has allowed them to push boundaries while respecting the series’ roots. “Even though that affords us the ability to push how realistic the lighting looks we always endeavor to retain the painterly spirit of prior games,” they explained.

The balance between innovation and tradition was a key consideration throughout development. “The way these elements combine might feel like we’ve moved away from the art direction of prior installments, however we are simply looking to push and evolve the look of each game as we make them.” This approach based on the interview suggests a careful evolution with Life is Strange: Double Exposure rather than a complete departure from the series’ established visual identity.

Looking to the Future

When asked about the future of the Life is Strange series, the development team demonstrated both excitement and careful consideration for what lies ahead. “We believe the series will always involve telling intimate, personal stories of unconventional protagonists whose lives become complicated by the supernatural,” Stauder and Farah shared. This commitment to the core narrative philosophy that has defined the series suggests a clear vision for future installments.

Rather than resting on established formulas, the team expressed their dedication to innovation within the series’ framework. They emphasized their desire to keep surprising players, stating, “My hope is that we can continue to surprise players with each future installment by always including new features that help reinvigorate the walking and talking gameplay that players know so well.” This balance between familiar gameplay elements and fresh mechanics appears to be central to their development philosophy.

While specific details about future installments remain under wraps, their response during the interview hints at a careful consideration of how to maintain the series’ signature elements with Life is Strange: Double Exposure while continuing to push creative boundaries. The team’s reluctance to reveal too much – “To say more than that could be too much,” they noted – suggests exciting developments may be in store for fans of the series.
