Sony and Sucker Punch Productions have given fans their best look yet at Ghost of Yotei gameplay during a special 20-minute State of Play presentation. The showcase revealed new details about the game’s world, combat system, and features ahead of its October 2, 2025 release on PlayStation 5.
Sucker Punch says Ghost of Yotei offers more player freedom than any game they’ve made. Players can choose to focus on combat, exploration, story, or whatever they enjoy most. The new Clue System can lead players in different directions based on what they discover. For example, questioning someone might send you to snowy mountains with hidden enemies, or to a village destroyed by fire and samurai.
The game brings back familiar activities like Bamboo Strike challenges and Hot Springs, but also adds new content like bounty hunting missions and Altars of Reflection that unlock new abilities for Atsu.
Atsu has access to more weapons than Jin from the first game. She can use different types of swords including the katana, spear, kusarigama chain blade, lengthy odachi, and dual swords. Each weapon works better in different situations and can be upgraded. For ranged combat, Atsu uses both a bow and a gun.

The popular Kurosawa Mode returns, offering a black-and-white experience inspired by the famous film director. Two new modes join it: Miike Mode, inspired by director Takashi Miike, brings the camera closer with more blood and mud. Watanabe Mode, named after Samurai Champloo director Shinichiro Watanabe, features original lo-fi music during exploration and combat.
As a surprise announcement, Sucker Punch revealed that special edition Ghost of Yotei PS5 consoles and unique DualSense controllers will be available when the game launches. Ghost of Yotei releases exclusively for PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025.
