Developer Sandfall Interactive has officially launched Version 1.4.0 for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, delivering a wide range of updates. Notably, this patch introduces the long-requested Battle Retry option, which removes one of the game’s most frustrating hurdles for players.
The patch arrives shortly after the game’s successful April launch. It builds on player feedback and introduces vital technical improvements. Additionally, the studio has teased upcoming patches that promise more content and enhancements in the near future.
Retry Battles Without Restarting

Among the update’s highlights is the new Battle Retry feature. Players can now retry combat encounters immediately after defeat, skipping the need to reload old saves. This feature improves pacing significantly, especially during difficult boss battles or long sequences.
As a result, players can remain immersed in the action without breaking momentum or narrative flow. Moreover, the retry function has been implemented in direct response to community feedback. It provides a seamless gameplay loop and reduces frustration linked to repeated restarts.
Visual Upgrades and Performance Boosts

Alongside gameplay changes, Version 1.4.0 includes several performance enhancements. Notably, Frame Generation and Low Latency support have been added for NVIDIA and Intel GPUs. These features reduce input lag and boost frame rates, making action sequences feel much smoother.
As a result, players with compatible hardware will notice better responsiveness across all areas. Though AMD FSR support has not yet been added, developers have confirmed it remains a priority. Therefore, users of AMD systems can expect further improvements in a future patch.
Enhanced Menus and UI Feedback

Another improvement lies in the updated menus and UI. The Pictos menu now clearly shows Lumina costs, enabling more strategic decision-making. An autoplay dialogue feature has also been added outside of cutscenes.
This change benefits players who prefer a hands-free story experience while exploring the world. Furthermore, volume settings are now split between exploration and combat. This allows for personalized sound control and a more comfortable experience.
Better Accessibility and Balance Tweaks

Accessibility has been improved with the addition of new icons to Lune’s Stains. These changes help colorblind players distinguish important in-game elements during combat. Furthermore, developers have adjusted game balance.
Certain Pictos combinations that allowed immortality-like effects have been corrected to ensure fair play. These updates ensure that players of all skill levels can enjoy a balanced and inclusive experience.
Smoother Gameplay and Bug Fixes

Version 1.4.0 also introduces several key bug fixes. Known issues like disappearing Rocher crystals and fog problems on Steam Deck have been resolved. Achievements such as “Expeditioner” and “Trailbreaker” now unlock correctly.
This change restores progress tracking and reduces the likelihood of reward-related frustration. Such improvements make gameplay smoother and more reliable across multiple systems.
Environmental Refinement

The update also brings subtle environmental changes across various levels. These include tweaks to lighting, ambient effects, and geometry, which collectively improve the game’s immersion.
While not always immediately noticeable, these refinements contribute to an overall more polished presentation. The game world now feels more cohesive and visually compelling.
