Stardew Valley Creator Commits to Free Updates and DLC

Known by his online handle ConcernedApe, Eric Barone, the developer behind the popular farming simulation game Stardew Valley, has made a bold commitment to his fanbase and recently pledged to never charge money for downloadable content (DLC) or free updates for the game.

This declaration came in response to a fan’s appreciation for the ongoing free updates to Stardew Valley. Barone stated, “I swear on the honour of my family name, I will never charge money for a DLC or update for as long as I live.” He even encouraged fans to hold him accountable to this promise.

Barone’s stance aligns with his track record of providing substantial free updates to Stardew Valley since its 2016 release. Barone released the game’s latest major update, version 1.6, for PC in March 2024, bringing a wealth of new content, including new festivals, items, crafting recipes, and a new farm type.

Currently, Barone is working on porting the 1.6 update to console and mobile platforms. He acknowledged the lengthy process, stating, “I know it is taking a long time, it’s on my mind every minute. I have personally been working on the mobile port every day.”

In addition to his ongoing work on Stardew Valley, Barone is developing a new game called Haunted Chocolatier. While Barone has revealed limited details about this confectionary-themed RPG, he may extend his commitment to free updates to this project as well, given the broad nature of his statement.
