In the realm of mobile gaming, adapting beloved franchises requires a delicate balance of honoring source material while creating engaging gameplay. Recently, we had the opportunity to conduct an exclusive email interview with the developer behind the OVERLORD mobile RPG Lord of Nazarick, diving into the challenges and creative decisions that shaped this ambitious mobile RPG adaptation of the popular dark fantasy series.
Bringing the World of OVERLORD to Mobile and Balancing Authenticity
The journey to transform OVERLORD’s rich universe into a mobile experience was no small feat. According to the developer, staying true to the source material while creating an immersive experience presented constant challenges.
“The biggest challenge was how we tried staying as true to OVERLORD as possible, and offering an immersive experience to satisfy its core fans. That meant constantly tackling various new problems as they came up, and refining the details. Honestly, time and energy were our biggest enemies,” the developer explained.

Their commitment to authenticity led to significant evolution in the game’s storytelling approach. What began as simple dialogue boxes in early Chinese version tests transformed into a more dynamic presentation combining camera work, text, voice-overs, and eventually animated cutscenes at key moments. The core narrative of OVERLORD revolves around Ainz’s ambition to conquer the world, and the development team built their gameplay systems around this central theme.
“In OVERLORD, Ainz’s goal, whether driven by his own ambition or Demiurge’s proposal, is to conquer the world. We built a wide variety of gameplay systems around this idea,” the developer noted. “We designed the main story quests, Expedition mode, and other features, all rooted in the original plot. We made sure that monsters, gameplay mechanics, and many other elements stay true to OVERLORD, trying to enhance player’s immersive experience.”
Character Development and Designing Dungeons
One of the most impressive aspects of Lord of Nazarick is its extensive character roster, each with unique abilities that reflect their portrayal in the original series.
“One of the great things about OVERLORD is that it already has a huge cast of distinctive characters, each with their own game-ready traits. That gave us an advantage to work from,” shared the developer. “We designed each character’s skills based on their original abilities, and since many of those were already unique and fascinating, we kept a lot of them intact.”
The team took care to ensure each character serves a purpose within the game’s strategic framework while maintaining their individual identity: “We developed unique builds for most characters. When you build your lineup around a specific composition, they’ll become even stronger. This way, new characters can retain their individual flair while also fitting into team-based strategies.”

The dungeon system in Lord of Nazarick was carefully crafted to provide meaningful challenges with appropriate rewards. The developer explained their approach: “Some dungeons are designed so that the challenge itself is directly tied to the rewards. Take the Treasury for example—bosses there have specific weaknesses, and if players manage to figure them out, they’ll either get powerful buffs or weaken the bosses significantly.”
For resource acquisition, the team made strategic decisions about difficulty levels: “As for core resource rewards, we usually assign them to modes that aren’t too difficult. The tougher dungeons tend to offer rewards mainly for exhibition, and we’ve added ranking features for hardcore players who enjoy competition and challenges.”

Free-to-Play Philosophy and Future Plans in Lord of Nazarick
When it comes to monetization, the development team prioritized accessibility while still creating opportunities for deeper engagement.
“Our goal has always been to let as many players as possible, including casual ones, enjoy Lord of Nazarick for free, find the fun in it, and feel the thrill of the OVERLORD story,” the developer emphasized. While acknowledging that some content requires more effort to master, they stressed that the game is designed to be enjoyable without spending money.

The developer expressed gratitude toward players who choose to support through purchases: “For players who are willing to support us by purchasing in-game packs and items—thank you so much! We truly appreciate everyone who’s played the game and supported us.”
The developer outlined their strategy for keeping the game fresh: “We’re planning to keep the game fresh by regularly rolling out new content and phasing out any gameplay that feels repetitive or no longer fun.” Their plan includes monthly themed story events with new dungeons and gameplay, introduction of fan-favorite characters, regular updates to the main story, and new growth systems to give older characters additional upgrade paths.
With this ambitious vision for ongoing development and a clear commitment to both OVERLORD fans and mobile gamers, Lord of Nazarick aims to create a lasting impression in the competitive mobile RPG landscape.
