Square Enix’s highly anticipated third installment in the Final Fantasy VII Remake project is currently nine months into development, with directors Naoki Hamaguchi and Yoshinori Kitase providing promising updates about the game’s progress.
Hamaguchi revealed in a recent interview with 4Gamer.net that development began immediately after the completion of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, around March or April 2024. The team has already established a solid gameplay foundation and is now focusing on refining the game’s design. “We’ve put together a great build that aligns with the team’s overall direction and vision,” Hamaguchi stated.
“Development is progressing smoothly and at a good pace, following our initial schedule.”

Producer Yoshinori Kitase added that the story, crafted by scenario writer Kazushige Nojima, has recently reached a greater sense of completeness, which is crucial for the final game in the remake trilogy.
Fans can also breathe a sigh of relief regarding platform availability. Unlike Rebirth, which was exclusively released on PlayStation 5, Kitase confirmed that the third game will not be next-gen exclusive. Hamaguchi further emphasized Square Enix’s commitment to multiplatform development, expressing a desire to make their games accessible to as many players as possible.

While no specific release date or additional details for the final act of the Final Fantasy VII Remake have been announced, the development team appears confident in their progress. Hamaguchi noted that more information would be shared in the future, encouraging fans to stay tuned for updates.
