FINAL FANTASY TACTICS The Ivalice Chronicles – Everything We Know So Far

After decades of waiting, one of the most beloved tactical RPGs is making its grand return. Square Enix has officially announced Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, bringing the classic 1997 PlayStation game to modern platforms with significant upgrades and enhancements.

Set to release on September 30, 2025, this isn’t just a simple remaster. The development team, which includes both original creators and new talent, has rebuilt the experience from the ground up while preserving everything that made the original so special. Notable names include Yasumi Matsuno, the original script and scenario writer who crafted the complex political narrative. Joining him is Hiroshi Minagawa, the original art director who defined the game’s distinctive visual style, and Kazutoyo Maehiro as director, who was part of the original development team nearly 30 years ago when he was just starting his career.

The last major release in the series was Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions for the PlayStation Portable, which brought important improvements to the original game. That version featured a complete retranslation, animated cutscenes for key story moments, and enhanced presentation with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The Ivalice Chronicles builds upon these foundations while adding substantial new features for modern platforms.

Why Bring It Back Now?

There may be other reasons they didn’t share, but it was revealed that Director Kazutoyo Maehiro only got to play Final Fantasy Tactics for the first time a few years ago. Despite the game’s high quality, there was no way to play it on modern platforms, which made it difficult for many players especially for newcomers to access. That was essentially the reason why they decided to develop this remaster.

The Story That Captivated a Generation

For newcomers to the series, Final Fantasy Tactics tells a gripping political tale set in the war-torn land of Ivalice. The story begins after a king’s death leaves his two-year-old son on the throne, creating a power vacuum that two powerful dukes rush to fill. Duke Goltanna the Black Lion and Duke Larg the White Lion clash in what becomes known as the War of the Lions.

At the center of this conflict are Ramza, the third son of House Beoulve, and Delita, a commoner raised among nobles. Their friendship and the choices they make drive a narrative filled with political intrigue, betrayal, and moral complexity that many consider among the finest in the entire Final Fantasy series.

The Ivalice Chronicles introduces a new State of the Realm feature that provides deeper storytelling through an interactive chronicle system. This showcases developments across Ivalice’s map, showing how events unfold over time with detailed narrative descriptions. Players can see character portraits positioned on locations, follow their journeys, and read about key story moments as they progress through the game’s complex political landscape.

The heart of Final Fantasy Tactics lies in its turn-based tactical battles. Players control Ramza and his growing army across diverse battlefields, from dense forests to imposing castle walls. Success depends on understanding terrain advantages, unit positioning, and predicting enemy movements. With over 20 jobs available and hundreds of abilities to master, the strategic possibilities are nearly endless. Players can even mix and match abilities from different jobs, creating custom builds for any situation.

The enhanced version now supports a maximum of 50 units in your party, a significant increase from the original’s limitations.

Story Changes

While the story remains mostly unchanged, Yasumi Matsuno who wrote and directed the original game contributed by adding new character conversations. This was made possible thanks to the implementation of full voice acting, which allowed for deeper character interactions that weren’t possible in the past. These additions aim to help players understand the story more naturally and enjoy it on a deeper level. But it’s important to note that these newly added conversations only appear under very specific conditions.

The enhanced version includes conversations that were cut from the original release due to time constraints and have now been restored – including post-join conversations for Agrias, Cid, Mustadio, and others. There are also some hidden branching dialogue options in some of the exchanges between Ramza and Gaffgarion. Dialogue in battle may change depending on who you choose to deploy, while enemy dialogue is mostly fixed.

What’s New in The Ivalice Chronicles

The enhanced version represents their vision for FFT if it were to be made from scratch for the current generation of gamers, featuring a complete overhaul of the UI with new features while maintaining no new sub-events or new characters. The enhanced version brings numerous improvements that modernize the classic experience without losing its essence.

The most noticeable change is the completely redesigned user interface. Combat now displays much more information at a glance, including zodiac signs, job classes, accuracy percentages, combat bonuses, bravery and faith levels, and the usual HP/MP/CT values. Players can see damage calculations and the unit turn order is shown on the left side of the screen, making battles more transparent.

Visually, the game has received a major upgrade. The original’s distinctive art style now shines on HD displays, with reworked graphics that enhance both the 3D battlefields and detailed pixel art characters. New animated cutscenes have been added to bring key story moments to life. The environment tiles that make up each battlefield now feature crisp HD textures and enhanced detail, making forests, swamps, castles, and valleys more immersive than ever before. The detailed pixel art characters have been carefully upgraded to complement these enhanced environments, creating a visual experience that honors the original while looking stunning on modern screens.

They used the smartphone version as a reference for the updated graphics, though the mobile version graphics could not be directly carried over to large screens because the appearance of the map and characters were not consistent. They increased the resolution while keeping the flashy effects to a minimum, with tweaks to on-screen effects. The pixel art is rendered in high resolution using a procedural process and then areas of concern are touched up such as the pixels on the face or hair.

The Ivalice Chronicles also brings back a beloved feature from the original game that was removed in The War of the Lions. Characters now have voiced dialogue lines when executing moves. 

One of the biggest additions is full voice acting in both English and Japanese. The script was entirely re-written to accommodate voice acting and particular voice actors, with voice actors having some influence on the dialogue. Chanting for spells and techniques are voiced, death cries are voiced, and start of character turn acknowledgement is voiced. The cast includes Joe Pitts as Ramza, Gregg Lowe as Delita, Hannah Melbourn as Agrias, Timothy Watson as Cidolfus, Harry McEntire as Mustadio, and Ben Starr as Dycedarg. Final Fantasy VII fans will recognize cameos from Cody Christian (Cloud Strife) and Briana White (Aerith Gainsborough).

The timing of Cloud joining has been moved to earlier in Chapter 4.

A new Tactical View feature helps players survey the battlefield and plan their moves more effectively. For those who want to speed through easier encounters, adjustable battle speed lets fights move at your preferred pace. Multiple difficulty levels ensure both newcomers and veterans can find their ideal challenge level.

Biggest Challenge During Development

There were a few hurdles in the development cycle of Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, but the biggest challenge came from the fact that the master data and source code for the original game no longer existed. Back then, it wasn’t common practice to preserve that kind of data, and the tools for managing such resources weren’t as developed as they are today. Developing the game without access to the original source code was extremely difficult, but the team put in a lot of hard work. They analyzed multiple versions of the game and essentially reconstructed the original programming. They even played the original and relied on how by the feel alone to work things out.

They thought they should not change the gameplay significantly. One example under consideration was the “charging” mechanic for spells which was born out of hardware limitations but they felt it would no longer be FFT if they changed that.

For Purists: The Classic Version

Recognizing that some fans prefer the original experience, The Ivalice Chronicles includes a classic version that faithfully recreates the 1997 gameplay with the improved War of the Lions translation. This version maintains the original’s look and feel while adding modern conveniences like auto-save.

Tips Before Playing the Game (from Director Maehiro)

Maehiro shared three main tips: character builds, equipment, and checking enemy status.

For character builds, he suggested experimenting with different jobs. It might seem overwhelming at first, but it becomes much easier once you choose a job to start with and build from there. The game will also include a mechanic to help guide players through this process.

Regarding equipment, each character’s job determines what gear they can use. You can visit outfitters in each town, and it’s highly recommended to keep all party members equipped with the best gear available. Proper equipment significantly impacts difficulty and can help protect against status ailments. There’s also a very handy feature that shows what equipment is sold in each town directly from the world map.

Lastly, when it comes to checking enemy status, each enemy has unique traits that make them tough in different ways. It’s important to come up with a strategy for every encounter and stay alert to avoid unexpected attacks.

Pricing and Editions

The Standard Edition of FINAL FANTASY TACTICS Ivalice Chronicles costs $49.99 and includes the full game experience. The Deluxe Edition, priced at $59.99, adds exclusive equipment including the Akademy Blade, Akademy Beret, Akademy Tunic, Ring of Aptitude, Phoenix Downs, and additional equipment sets for Ramza.

For collectors, a $200 Collector’s Box is available exclusively through the Square Enix Store. This premium package includes a Ramza Beoulve figure, Zodiac Stones acrylic art set, Chocobo mini plush set, pop-up art of the Outlying Church, and an art sheet collection, all housed in a special art box.

Additionally, all preorders include bonus white equipment for Ramza: a Mythril Knife, Spiked Boots that increase jump range, plus High Potions and Ethers to help start the adventure.

FINAL FANTASY TACTICS  – The Ivalice Chronicles will launch simultaneously across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Preorders are currently available for all platforms except Nintendo Switch versions.
