In a crossover between the worlds of boxing journalism and video game development, renowned boxing magazine The Ring has announced a partnership with Japanese studio Dimps to create an original boxing video game. The collaboration brings together The Ring’s boxing expertise with the game development prowess of Dimps, led by industry veteran Takashi Nishiyama.
According to the announcement, the untitled boxing game will feature all-new original characters rather than licensed boxers. While development has not yet begun, the companies stated work will commence “soon” with plans to introduce “a host of exciting new characters” to the boxing game genre.

Nishiyama brings considerable fighting game pedigree to the project. Known primarily as the director of the original Street Fighter and Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, he also worked as a game designer on classics like Moon Patrol and Kung-Fu Master during his time at Capcom, SNK, and Irem before founding Dimps in March 2000.
Since its establishment, Dimps has built an impressive portfolio including the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai series, Sonic Advance games, Street Fighter IV, Street Fighter V, and the Dragon Ball: Xenoverse franchise among others.

In their official announcement on social media, The Ring described the partnership as a strategic union of “The Ring’s unmatched authority in boxing with game developer Dimps’ decades-long experience in crafting classic games.” The magazine referred to Nishiyama as the creator of “arguably the greatest fighting game series of all time” in Street Fighter.
