AppMagic has outlined effective strategies for mobile game developers to enhance player engagement and revenue during the summer season of 2025.
Summer is an ideal season to launch LiveOps events in mobile games. It’s universally recognized, emotionally resonant, and not tied to a single date – giving developers creative freedom. Players are more relaxed, receptive to fresh content, and responsive to visually or narratively themed updates.
In preparation for summer 2025, top-performing summer events from 2024 have been reviewed. Using AppMagic’s LiveOps and Updates Calendar, six events were identified, tied to revenue spikes or common usage patterns:
- Albums: Royal Match, Project Makeover
- Passes: Royal Match, Squad Busters
- Milestone Events: Project Makeover, Triple Match 3D
Albums
Albums have become a staple in both Casual and Midcore titles. Centered around collection mechanics, they layer seamlessly over core gameplay and often coincide with other events. Their gacha-driven systems consistently promote retention and monetization by encouraging players to complete card sets.
Royal Match: Familiar Formula, Seasonal Twist
LiveOps Tags: Album, Seasonal, Milestone, Long (10+ days)
Dates: July 1 – September 1

The Summer Collection event spanned two months, during which players completed 15 card sets. Cards were earned by participating in other events, completing levels, opening chests, or interacting with friends. Functioning as a persistent overlay, the event complemented regular gameplay without disruption.
Royal Match excels at combining multiple long- and short-term event types. Albums, being among the longest formats, reinforced player retention. Their synergy with concurrent passes and tournaments helped drive a 31.46% revenue increase during the campaign.
Project Makeover: Debut Album Event
LiveOps Tags: Album, Seasonal, Milestone, Other Reward System, Long (10+ days)
Dates: July 8 – September 1

Summer Splash marked the game’s first album event. It followed a tried-and-true format: 24 collections of 8 cards, obtainable through level completion, in-game offers, and other events. A trading system let players swap duplicates with friends – adding a social touch.
The trading system reduced grind fatigue and promoted community interaction. The album aligned well with the game’s existing LiveOps framework, overlapping with 3–5 rotating events for consistent engagement.
Battle Passes
Battle passes break progression into achievable chunks, encouraging daily activity. Their dual-track design supports both free and paying users, making them effective for both engagement and monetization.
Royal Match: The Anchor of Seasonal LiveOps
LiveOps Tags: Seasonal, Paid Pass, Milestone, Long (10+ days)
Dates: July 1 – August 1

The Summer Pass included two progression tracks and milestone rewards, capped with a bonus bank. The free tier offered solid value, while the premium version included boosters, album cards, cosmetics, and team gifts.
The pass and album ran simultaneously. Cards earned via the pass boosted album progress, driving deeper engagement across both systems.
Among 10+ simultaneous events, the pass acted as a unifying structure, tying everything together and reinforcing daily gameplay rhythms.
Squad Busters: First Major Content Push
LiveOps Tags: Seasonal, Paid Pass, Milestone, Long (10+ days)
Dates: July 1 – August 14

Launched a month after the game’s debut, the Beach Party! pass aimed to revive waning player interest. It followed standard dual-track progression, offering a Mega Unit as the final reward—usable in battle and re-obtainable multiple times.
Despite appealing visuals, the pass lacked meaningful exclusives (e.g., no skins or avatars). The final reward had limited perceived value due to its one-time use.
While metrics declined (due to core gameplay issues), the pass still became the game’s second-best in-app purchase. Later passes improved on feedback by adding cosmetics.
Milestones
Milestone events are similar to battle passes but without monetization tiers. They reward players solely based on in-game progress, providing achievement without pressure. This makes them highly accessible and perfect for sustaining engagement.
Project Makeover: Summer Retreat
LiveOps Tags: Customization/Decoration, Competitive, Milestone, Leaderboard, Medium (4–10 days)
Dates: June 21 – June 28

Players styled avatars, took themed photos, and received votes. Leaderboard rankings determined rewards. Social voting and customization created strong emotional involvement.
Triple Match 3D: Summer Series
LiveOps Tags: Irregular, Milestone, Medium (4–10 days)
Dates: June 7 – August 9

Eight milestone events ran back-to-back, each with light thematic tweaks (e.g., from beaches to fruit). Players filled a progress bar by completing levels – unlocked at level 11.
Summer is one of the most culturally resonant and easily recognizable seasonal themes. It provides a versatile canvas for storytelling, design, and monetization – perfect for LiveOps.
