Why Sonic X Shadow Generations is One of the Best Entry in the Series

2024 is a very special year for Shadow the Hedgehog fans, as it’s a period where SEGA is putting a massive promotional focus on Sonic’s iconic rival. Similar to how they did with “Fast. Friends. Forever.” last year, the campaign for “Years of Shadow” is also filled with many surprises, one of which is definitely the arrival of Sonic X Shadow Generations as the franchise’s latest big game.

Not only is it packaged as a remaster of one of the best modern games in the franchise, but they’ve also delivered a brand new campaign dedicated entirely to Shadow, and we’re absolutely thrilled with its quality. But before we get into what makes this game so special for all Sonic fans, let’s first take a look back at Sonic’s history, especially for those of you who might still be relatively unfamiliar with SEGA’s beloved mascot.

History of Sonic The Hedgehog

The history of Sonic the Hedgehog begins with SEGA’s efforts to create a main star that could lift their first flagship franchise, especially in an effort to market the SEGA Genesis console. In 1991, the first installment of the franchise officially debuted to fantastic success both in terms of reception and sales. In a short time, the game managed to break many fantastic records that exceeded SEGA’s expectations, which was then immediately followed by the release of the even more successful sequel in 1992.

Since then, Sonic the Hedgehog has continued to grow not only with a focus on video games but also as a media franchise that has expanded into various other projects over the decades. This has culminated in a live-action film adaptation that fans and newcomers deeply love, leading to a new sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which will hit theaters on December 20, 2024. But of course, video games are still Sonic’s main home, and it’s safe to say that the franchise has gone through a very interesting evolutionary phase.

Starting from the debut of several classic titles in the ’90s with a focus on 2D-based side-scrolling platformer gameplay, SEGA then truly adapted Sonic to the 3D universe for the first time with Sonic Adventure, which was arguably the birth of the Modern Sonic era. Despite the changes in gameplay style and Sonic’s design, SEGA still pays great attention to both by releasing games that maintain the classic style through Sonic Mania, and those that bring significant changes to the freedom of playing in large open spaces through Sonic Frontiers. But of course, let’s not forget that there’s already a game that brings the best of the two eras together in one bundle through Sonic Generations.

The Rival’s Debut

Sonic’s status as the main star is absolute, but every hero must have some sort of villain to face against who can even be a true rival, and this role fits so well with Shadow the Hedgehog. First debuting in Sonic Adventure 2 (2001), Shadow is a hedgehog with devastating powers and potential whom Professor Gerald Robotnik created. Once drowning in an obsession for revenge, he has slowly but surely grown into a character who finds a new purpose, emerging as a badass antihero.

Originally planned to appear only in Sonic Adventure 2, his character ended up being so popular and loved by many fans that SEGA kept him around to appear in future games and other projects. He even got a standalone spin-off game that incorporated third-person shooter gameplay elements. Just like Sonic, he’s a character whose popularity has never faded and has his own strong fan base.

With the Year of Shadow celebrations finally followed by the debut of Sonic X Shadow Generations, the love for the character is truly evident and seems to only solidify the hope of seeing more cool Shadow action in the future, even after this celebration period. Thanks to Sonic X Shadow Generations, we also get the thrill of playing the latest Shadow game that we’ve been waiting for.

The Legacy Is Now REMASTERED

First up is definitely the remaster of the Sonic Generations campaign, which brings a variety of essential overhauls, especially in terms of visual quality and performance. While there’s a clear contrast in quality compared to Shadow Generations, what it offers is still, in our opinion, a timeless game for both longtime fans and newcomers alike. Being able to experience the platforming fun of the series’ iconic stages, especially with the different gameplay variations of classic and Modern Sonic in one bundle, remains Sonic Generations’ main strength.

Amazing New Campaign Focuses on Shadow

But of course, what makes this game especially special is the addition of a brand new campaign through Shadow Generations. While it offers less content than Sonic Generations, which SEGA developed as a separate standalone game in the past, the quality remains great nonetheless. There’s so much love put into every stage, new original story, cinematic scenes, and down to the gameplay control of Shadow Generations that it ends up being one of our favorite experiences of the franchise in many years. We especially love the implementation of Doom Powers that further enriches the gameplay variety of Shadow, both in terms of action and when trying to get through the various obstacles in each stage.

Various New Content and Even More Replayability

Aside from the various overhauls brought to Sonic Generations and the top-notch campaign in Shadow Generations, SEGA also brought other surprises. Some of them include the addition of Chao Rescue portions inserted in various stages, the availability of past mini-games in the Casino Night Zone, and the Museum feature to access a variety of digital content ranging from artwork to music. Not to forget, they also implemented Drop Dash, a unique action that can be especially useful as a Sonic utility to speed up Sonic’s maneuvers more flexibly.

If that wasn’t enough, Shadow Generations further maximizes the game’s already high replayability. The main excitement of playing the game is definitely returning to the various stages for collectibles, trying different routes, or most importantly, aiming for the highest score. Each campaign has an Online Mode that allows you to compete with other players on the leaderboard, so you can imagine that veteran players and speedrunners will especially enliven the community with their best showcase of skills.

One of the Best Entries in the Series

With a revival that brings a special collaboration of two generations of Sonic to the main spotlight on his rival, Sonic X Shadow Generations feels like a game that can reach the most fans. Whether you’re a longtime fan who misses Sonic’s legendary ’90s era, someone who grew up with 3D Sonic games in the 2000s, or someone who has a huge love for Shadow, this new entry has facilitated an experience that can satisfy all of those groups of fans.

Newcomers especially are in for a treat, as they get to experience Sonic’s evolution with the franchise’s signature platforming gameplay style and get to know more about Shadow, who now gets a special spotlight through an amazing new campaign.
