The Elder Scrolls Online is launching its biggest update yet with “Seasons of the Worm Cult: Part 1” and Update 46. After more than ten years of content, this expansion brings players to a brand-new island, introduces a year-long story, and adds a game-changing feature that lets you build your own custom class.
The main attraction is Solstice, a mysterious island located south of Black Marsh that’s never appeared in Elder Scrolls lore before. Unlike recent tropical zones in ESO, Solstice has a Mediterranean feel with sun-soaked coastal cities, ancient ruins, and haunted temples. The island has a rich history of conflict between native Argonian tribes and exiled High Elves from House Corolania, who came here to practice forbidden necromancy.

The most striking feature is the Writhing Wall, a massive structure that literally splits the island in half. This isn’t just scenery – it’s the centerpiece of the entire year’s story. Players will slowly uncover its mysteries throughout 2025, with a major event planned where everyone works together to try and bring it down.
Story and Characters
The expansion brings back fan-favorite characters like Razum-dar (the Khajiit spy many call ESO’s James Bond), along with Woxen Ash, Gabrielle Benallais, and Skordo the Knife. Players join the Sterk Fellowship, a team-up between the Mages Guild, Fighters Guild, and heroes from all three alliances to fight the returning Worm Cult.
The story dives deep into the tensions between different groups on the island, including the Tideborn Argonians (who worship the ocean instead of the traditional Hist trees) and Nordic settlers who’ve been isolated for centuries. Two Daedric Princes also play major roles: Meridia brings light and life themes, while Sanguine hosts a twisted carnival called the Everlasting Fair.

Update 46 shakes up the usual quest formula with new mechanics. Players will use magic to rebuild broken bridges in Meridia’s temple, guide enchanted armor through puzzle chambers, and tackle carnival obstacle courses that mix fun with danger. The developers wanted to give players new ways to interact with the world beyond typical combat and dialogue.
The island is home to unique enemies like the Vosgrana Guardians (ancient Argonian stone golems) and the Vihath Behemoth, a massive feathered creature that started as an internal developer experiment and became so popular they made it a full world boss with boulder attacks and spinning crash moves.

Build Your Own Class with Subclassing
The biggest addition is subclassing, a completely free feature that lets you create custom character builds. Once you have one character at level 50, you unlock this system for all new characters you make.
Here’s how it works: instead of being stuck with your class’s three skill lines, you can swap out up to two of them with skill lines from other classes. Want a Nightblade with some Sorcerer abilities? Or a Templar who can use Necromancer skills? Now you can do that, as long as you keep at least one skill line from your original class.

To get started, you complete a short quest called “Study and Discipline” available from the Crown Store or NPCs near major cities. The system works with existing features like the Armory for saving builds, and skill points are refunded when you change lines. New skill lines cost two skill points instead of one to unlock abilities, and you’ll need to level them from scratch.
ZeniMax Online is changing how they tell stories in ESO. Instead of everything happening in one year like usual, the Worm Cult storyline will unfold throughout 2025, with the world actually changing based on what happens. This gives the story more room to develop and makes player choices feel more meaningful over time.

What This Means for Players
Whether you’re a longtime ESO player or thinking about jumping in, this update offers something for everyone. The new island provides fresh content to explore, the subclassing system opens up tons of build possibilities, and the year-long story promises to keep things interesting for months to come.

The expansion launches as part of Update 46, with subclassing available to all players for free. The only requirement is reaching level 50 on one character to unlock the system. For players who own paid classes like Warden, Necromancer, or Arcanist, you can mix those skill lines into your custom builds too.
With its mysterious island setting, returning beloved characters, innovative quest mechanics, and the freedom to build truly unique characters, Seasons of the Worm Cult looks like it could be one of ESO’s most memorable updates yet.
