SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have officially named their mysterious new game STRANGER THAN HEAVEN during Summer Game Fest, dropping a fresh teaser trailer for the title previously known as Project Century. The game was first announced at The Game Awards in December 2024, surprising fans with its 1915 Japan setting – a major shift from the studio’s usual modern-day stories. The new trailer continues to show the same brutal combat style that caught attention during the initial reveal.

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN brings back real-time fighting after the studio’s recent move to turn-based combat in their Like a Dragon series. The gameplay footage shows intense battles where players can grab everyday items like crowbars and glass bottles to use as weapons. The violence level appears much higher than what fans typically see from RGG Studio games.
The game takes place in an alternate version of 1915 Japan, though story details remain mostly unknown. The main character shown in the trailers is completely new, adding to the mystery around what the game will actually be about.

This announcement comes as RGG Studio stays busy with multiple projects. They released Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth earlier this year and have Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii coming out on February 21. The studio has been incredibly active, putting out 12 games in just five years, including Yakuza titles, Judgment games, and even Super Monkey Ball entries.
SEGA and RGG Studio haven’t announced which gaming platforms will get STRANGER THAN HEAVEN or when it might release. The footage shown is still from early development stages, so fans will likely need to wait longer for more concrete details about this intriguing new project.
