Nintendo has unveiled new quality-of-life improvements coming to Nintendo 64 (N64) games on Nintendo Switch Online for the upcoming Switch 2 console. The enhanced features aim to modernize the classic gaming experience while preserving the nostalgic appeal of retro titles.
The Switch 2 version of Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online will introduce three key features, two of which are exclusive to the new console. The standout addition is a rewind function that allows players to reverse gameplay by several seconds at the press of a button. This feature enables players to retry challenging sections, such as difficult jumps or timing-sensitive sequences. Nintendo demonstrated this capability using Super Mario 64’s ice slide level, showing how players can undo mistakes and attempt sections multiple times.
A CRT screen filter will also be available exclusively on Switch 2, recreating the visual characteristics of older cathode-ray tube televisions. This filter adds horizontal scan lines across the display to smooth out the angular polygons typical of N64-era graphics, providing a more authentic retro gaming experience that mirrors how these games originally appeared on period-appropriate hardware.

The third feature, button remapping and control customization, will be available on both the original Switch and Switch 2. Players can reassign button functions to more comfortable positions or map actions to buttons that weren’t present on the original N64 controller, such as the ZL button or directional pad. The system also allows adjustment of analog stick sensitivity and camera controls, potentially enabling inverted camera options in games that didn’t originally support such settings.
While N64 games remain playable on the original Nintendo Switch through Nintendo Switch Online, only the button remapping functionality will be backward compatible. The rewind and CRT filter features are designed specifically for the Switch 2’s enhanced capabilities.
