Phainon is the newest powerful damage dealer introduced in Honkai Star Rail version 3.4 who brings a unique transformation mechanic to the battlefield. This Physical DPS character can single-handedly turn fights around with his special Khaslana form, making him a strong choice for players looking for a dominant carry character.
What Makes Phainon Special
Phainon’s main appeal lies in his transformation ability. When he enters his Khaslana state, something remarkable happens – your other team members temporarily leave the field, all enemies become weak to Physical damage, and Phainon gets massive buffs. During this transformation, he becomes immune to crowd control effects and can’t be killed by normal attacks, letting him fight without worry.

Outside of combat, Phainon helps your team by increasing the maximum Technique Points by 3. His Technique ability is particularly useful for exploration, as it can instantly defeat multiple enemies in the overworld without consuming Technique Points if you don’t hit anything.
How Phainon’s Abilities Work
Before Transformation
Phainon builds up “Coreflame” points to activate his Ultimate. He gains these points when any character (including teammates) uses abilities on him. When teammates target him, he also gets a 30% critical damage boost for 3 turns.
His basic attack deals 140% of his ATK as Physical damage to one enemy. His skill “Let There Be Light” gives him 2 Coreflame points while dealing 300% ATK damage to the main target and 120% to nearby enemies.

The Transformation: Khaslana Form
Once Phainon has 12 Coreflame points, he can use his Ultimate to transform into Khaslana. This creates a special battle zone where your allies become “Departed” and can’t act, while all enemies gain Physical weakness.
In this form, Phainon doesn’t follow normal turn order. Instead, he gets 8 special extra turns at 60% of his base speed. His stats get huge boosts – 80% more ATK and 270% more HP. At the end of his transformation, he uses a powerful “Final Hit” that deals up to 960% of his ATK as damage split among all enemies.

As Khaslana, Phainon’s abilities become much stronger. His basic attack now hits multiple enemies and gives him “Scourge” stacks. His skill “Calamity: Soulscorch Edict” forces all enemies to act immediately while giving him damage reduction and counter-attack abilities.
The most powerful ability is “Foundation: Stardeath Verdict,” which consumes Scourge stacks to deal massive damage. For every 4 Scourge consumed, it deals extra hits and distributes additional damage to all enemies.
Best Equipment for Phainon
Light Cones, Relics, and Stats
His signature light cone “Thus Burns the Dawn” is the best choice, increasing his speed and damage while ignoring enemy defenses. If you don’t have it, good alternatives include “The Unreachable Side,” “Brighter Than the Sun,” or the 4-star option “A Secret Vow.”
The best relic set is “Wavestrider Captain” paired with the new “Arcadia of Woven Dreams” planar ornament introduced in version 3.4. This combination works well with his solo-fighting style during transformation.
For main stats, focus on Critical Rate for the body piece (or Critical Damage if you have good support), ATK% for feet and link rope, and Physical Damage or ATK% for the planar sphere. Your target stats should be at least 70% Critical Rate, 140% Critical Damage, and 3100+ ATK.

Team Building and Eidolon Priority
Phainon works best with support characters since he fights alone during transformation. Good team compositions include Phainon with 3 supports, or Phainon with 2 supports and 1 sustain character. Recommended teammates include Sunday, Robin, Sparkle, and Bronya for 5-star options, or Tingyun, March 7th, and Lynx for 4-star alternatives.

If you’re planning to get multiple copies, E1 improves his transformation speed and adds critical damage. E2 is considered very important as it gives Physical resistance penetration and an extra turn when using his strongest attack. E6 removes limits on Coreflame overflow and adds true damage. For most players, getting his signature light cone is more valuable than E1. If you have resources for 3 upgrades total, prioritize E2 after getting the light cone.
Should You Pull for Phainon?
Phainon is a good choice for veteran players who have plenty of support characters but lack a strong Physical DPS. New players will also benefit from his carrying power in early content. However, he needs proper support to work well in harder content.

If you already have two strong teams built, you might want to skip his banner and focus on strengthening your existing characters through rerun banners instead. Phainon requires investment in support characters to reach his full potential, so make sure you have or can get the teammates he needs. His unique transformation mechanic and high damage output make him an interesting character, but consider your current roster and needs before pulling.
