Santa Monica Studio, the acclaimed developer behind the God of War franchise, appears to be venturing into new territory with its first original intellectual property (IP) in over two decades. This development comes to light through the LinkedIn profile of a former employee who has recently rejoined the studio.
According to the LinkedIn account of Glauco Longhi, who returned to Santa Monica Studio in early 2024, he is now serving as the Character Supervisor on a “new IP.” This marks a significant departure for the studio, which has primarily focused on the God of War series since its debut in 2005. Santa Monica Studio’s last original IP was Kinetica, released for the PlayStation 2 in 2001. Since then, the studio has become synonymous with the God of War franchise, producing multiple critically acclaimed entries in the series.
While details about the new project remain scarce, this move aligns with Sony’s recent strategy of experimenting with its gaming portfolio. The company has been exploring new IPs and expanding existing franchises in various directions, as evidenced by projects like LEGO Horizon Adventures and the upcoming Astro Bot game.
It’s worth noting that in 2022, following the release of God of War Ragnarök, Santa Monica Studio had hinted at working on multiple new projects.
