Electronic Arts has pulled the plug on its upcoming Black Panther video game and is closing down Cliffhanger Games, the studio that was making it. The Black Panther game was initially announced around 2023.

The news comes from an internal email sent by EA Entertainment president Laura Miele to company staff. In the message, Miele explained that these tough choices are part of EA’s plan to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.” Along with canceling the Black Panther project and shutting down Cliffhanger Games, EA is also laying off workers from its mobile and central teams. The company won’t say exactly how many people are losing their jobs, but sources suggest it’s fewer than the 300 employees who were let go just last month.

“These decisions are hard,” Miele wrote in her email. “They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.” Despite the cuts, EA says it’s doubling down on its biggest money-makers. The company will focus on four main franchises: Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends.
EA also confirmed it’s still working on several other big projects, including an Iron Man game at Motive Studios, the next Star Wars Jedi game, and a new Mass Effect title at BioWare.
